Chapter 01
Reinforcing and anchorage
A cavity wall has to act as one assembly without being rigidly locked together. Eye wire reinforcing mesh ties the bed joints, and anchors and straps hold the veneer back to the structure while still allowing the small differential movement that heat and moisture cause every day. Termination bars hold the top edge of a flashing tight to the backup, which is a small part that fails quietly because a loose flashing still looks installed from outside.

Moisture and drainage
Brick is not waterproof, and it is not supposed to be. Water gets into the cavity and the assembly is designed to send it back out, so flashing, weeps and drip edge are one detail rather than three products. Flashing collects, weeps release, and drip edge throws the water clear of the face instead of letting it track back along the underside of the course below.
Movement and finishing
Control joints give a wall a planned place to move. Leave them out and the wall picks its own place, which is usually a corner or the head of an opening. New masonry cleaner takes off mortar smear and early efflorescence, and the timing matters more than the product: clean too early and you pull mortar out of joints that have not cured yet.
