Chapter 01
Reinforcement and support
Steel only works where it sits, so the support you pick should be decided by the surface under it rather than by what is nearest the door. Plastic sand chairs spread load on a soft subgrade without punching through a vapor barrier. Slab bolsters run continuously and hold a whole mat at one height when the crew has to walk across it. Dobie bricks are concrete, so they never float and they are still the quickest answer for side cover on a vertical face.

Forming and barriers
Forming products decide the shape, and the barrier products decide how long it lasts. Carton void forms give expansive soil somewhere to go instead of into the underside of your slab, which matters in this part of Oklahoma. Vapor barriers only perform if nothing has punched through them, which is why the chair you place on top is part of the barrier decision and not a separate one.
Dowels and load transfer
Load transfer is the difference between a joint that works and a joint that steps. Paving dowels and baskets keep the bar aligned across the joint so the two slabs move together vertically while still being free to shrink apart. Plate and taper dowels handle the same job where the joint also has to accommodate movement in more than one direction.
Chemicals, curing and repair
Curing is the cheapest strength you will ever buy and the easiest to skip on a hot Oklahoma afternoon. A curing compound holds the water in the slab long enough for the cement to finish hydrating, and a hardener keeps the surface from dusting under traffic later. Form release makes stripping clean, which saves the patching material further down this same list.
